Welcome!
It is my goal to live a joyful life with less - less spending, less reliance on "the system," less debt, less stuff, and less waste.
I also want to live a life of more - more time, more freedom, more joy, more abundance, and more ability to give to others.
In order to live this way, steps need to be taken one at a time - steps that create a framework and method to achieve all of this. Collectively, the skills, methods and steps involved can be called "Homesteading."
On this website, I share with you our progress, plus lots of ideas, recipes, tips and guides. Will you join me on this journey?
Below is something of a guide to the layout and contents of the site (which of course is being slowly added to each week), or use the links and drop-down menus above to navigate to the sections of interest to you.
Note: I formerly had a homesteading website under the name Kiwi Urban Homestead; all of the original contents are now HERE.

Why "Thrifty Kiwi"?
I want this site to reflect who I am and what I'm trying to achieve. I'm a New Zealander - we call ourselves "Kiwis." The word "thrifty" has two definitions:
1. using money and other resources carefully and not wastefully
2. (of livestock or plants) strong and healthy
These pretty well sum up what I'm aiming for - to use money and resources wisely, and to raise strong, healthy plants, livestock and people! It's also nice to use a title that reminds me constantly what my goals are - it's motivating.

Homesteading
Homesteading is a lifestyle of self-sufficiency, though exactly how that is worked out in practice varies around the world. Find out more about how I define homesteading. I also describe how we began this process, and outline my specific goals for 2016 and beyond. Read more......
Gardening
Growing our own food is the focus of my gardening, though I also grow herbs and flowers for cooking, medicine, pleasure, and to attract beneficial insects. I began my garden in 2013, with the goal to grow 1000kg of food in 12 months. Since then the garden has continued to develop and expand. My garden blog contains lots of photos and updates, ideas and methods. Read more.....
Skills
There are lots of skills to learn and develop! I plan to focus on one new one each month, and add it to the site as I go. Homesteading skills include such things as budgeting, menu planning, thrifty shopping, preserving food, streamlined housekeeping, DIY and more. There is a drop-down menu under Skills so you can select the one you want to start with. Read more.....

What I believe.....
What each of us hold as basic beliefs will inform what we choose to do, and how we choose to do it. In my About page, I outline my own beliefs and approach, so you know where I'm coming from. If your own beliefs differ, you will still find lots within these pages you can use! Read more....
Recipes
This section contains lots of different recipes, divided into sub-categories of Meals & Snacks, Preserving, Household products, and Health & Beauty. Read more.....
Animals
Animals and other critters can be a valuable addition to the homestead. Currently we have dogs and cats, sheep, worms, chickens and ducks. Read more....
