Dishwashing liquid of some sort is in every household. Most people want one that foams nicely, smells pleasant, cuts the grease and doesn't dry their hands out. But did you ever stop to think about what's in the dishwash and whether it's good for you, or the environment? And whether you could save a lot of money (and maybe your health) with some easy DIY alternatives? I'll leave it to you to research what is in dishwashing liquids if you wish (but THIS is a good place to start).
In this post I will share the first version of home made dish soap I tried. This one does not lather (purely cosmetic anyway), but is super simple and cheap to make, and does a good job on the dishes.

Ingredients: 1 TBSP grated Sunlight soap (or Castile or similar) 1 TBSP borax (I buy in bulk through Trade Me - also available from Bin Inn) 1 3/4 cups near-boiling water 10-20 drops essential oil (optional - lemon is a good choice) Method: Place grated soap and borax into a heat proof bowl. Add hot water, and stir with a whisk until soap is complete dissolved. (This may take 5 mins or so - intermittent stirring is fine). Leave to cool for 6 hours or so, whisking from time to time. The soap will gel as it cools. Add essential oil if using, whisk to combine. Pour into a clean dishwashing liquid bottle, or a small glass pump bottle. To use, squirt 1-2 tsp dish soap under hot running water and use your dish brush to whisk a bit to dissolve. Wash dishes as usual. |
